The Little Boy from Manly
In 1885, a young boy from Manly sent a letter to the Premier of New South Wales with a cheque for £25 for the Patriotic Fund. The boy's gesture was so touching that it captured the hearts of Australians everywhere and he quickly became a national symbol of patriotism.
The boy was often depicted in cartoons, dressed in the pantaloons and frilled shirt associated with English schoolboys. He became known as "The Little Boy from Manly" and was celebrated as a symbol of Young Australia.
